On January 12, Mark Zukerberg announced a major overhaul to Facebook’s newsfeed. His goal? To promise the time users spend on the social media platform would be time more “well-spent.”
“We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us,” said Zukerberg in his post on Jan. 11. “That’s why we’ve always put friends and family at the core of the experience.”
Following feedback from the community that public content (meaning posts from businesses, brands and media) was crowding out the more personal connections between friends and family, Zukerberg decided users will now see less public content. The public content they do see will be held to higher standards, and encourage “meaningful interactions between people,” he explained.
So, what does this mean for business owners? The content they post will now be de-prioritized in favour of posts by users’ friends and family, and in order to show up in newsfeeds, they’re going to have to spend more money.
So, is Facebook advertising worth it? In a word, yes. And here’s why.
Facebook Increases Your Brand Exposure
At last count, there were more than 2 billion (yes, two billion!) users on Facebook. Just think of what that astounding number can mean for your business.
Facebook provides businesses with the largest advertising opportunity, and is far less expensive than other advertising mediums such as magazines, radio and newspapers. Still doubtful? Maybe this will change your way of thinking: according to an eMarketer study, 96 per cent of social media marketers consider Facebook the most effective social media advertising platform. What are you waiting for? It’s time to get social!
It Attracts New Customers to Your Business
One of Facebook advertising’s greatest features, says Chelsea Davidson, our very own marketing coordinator, is that businesses are able to utilize a wide range of targeting options. In a nutshell, this means you can choose exactly who you wish to reach.
Whether you prefer to target people based on demographics, location, interest, or even behaviours, Facebook makes it super simple to focus your advertising budget on who you feel matters most.
Facebook Increases Your Social Following
Facebook advertising (when done correctly!) not only gets you more business, it also increases your social following by driving people to your page where they can learn more about what your business does, what makes it unique, and what it can offer to them.
And this is when the real magic starts! Users can begin interacting with one another, and a community of sorts will take shape. Be sure to encourage users to leave reviews, and host contests and promotions to get the most bang for your buck.
